Beyond the Pixels is a London-based studio focused on reimagining retro ideas for new players. Announced last year, its first project has apparently already brought about a remarkable transformation. Keep reading for all about Beyond the Pixels’ first title, Astro Burn.
What started out as a retro shooter is now a full 16-bit style cute-’em-up!
The studio has increased the number of adorable animals on screen. They’re leaning further towards classic arcade aesthetics. The team is also preparing to launch a Kickstarter campaign, aiming to bring Astro Burn to physical format via a collectible 16-bit style USB cartridge.
The game first released a demo in September 2025, featuring Astro the space cat as the central character in a frenetic shooter. The demo launched on Steam, where a large number of players tested it and shared feedback. That reaction became an important influence on recent developments.
Game producer Haz Dulul explained that players wanted more personality, more animals, and more light-hearted entertainment. As a result, the original concept was reworked and Beyond the Pixels’ Astro Burn was rebuilt into a 16-bit style cute-em-up (whatever that means).
Along with visual changes, the game has gained new mechanics and content. There are also additional power-ups, such as catnip power moves. Additionally, the team has also added a local two-player co-op option that allows two players to tackle the action together.
Players who tried the original 2025 demo, as well as those who are brand new to the project, can download it now Brand new demo on Steam. Meanwhile, plans are underway to expand Astro Burn into a broader brand with merchandise, collectibles, and cross-media.
